The Secret to Feeling Good in the Pursuit of Your Goal!

Are you excited about setting goals and is it easy for you to stay on track? Or do you feel a lack of inspiration because you know you will not stick with it?

Here is a super powerful way that will keep you on track to reach your goals and enjoy the process along the way.

Push the Dopamine Button!

Dopamine is one of the “feel-good” brain chemicals and it has many more beneficial effects. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a messenger between nerve cells.

It plays a key role in keeping us focused on our goals and motivating us to attain them. Dopamine causes you to want, desire, seek out and search. It increases your general level of arousal and your goal-directed behavior. Dopamine makes you curious about ideas and fuels your search for information (Psychology Today, n.d.).

So, dopamine acts as a motivator and creates a sensation of pleasure when the brain is stimulated by achievement.

What’s most important and perhaps new to you is that we release dopamine into our brains, thus we feel good, when we work towards our goals not just when we achieve them.

Evidence suggests that the pursuit of our goals releases as much, or more, dopamine than the actual attainment!

How can use this knowledge to joyfully stay on track to achieve our goals?

Increase the Dopamine Release through the feeling of accomplishment and celebrate every little step. For example:

  • Create a visual to keep your attention on your progress
  • Break big goals down into bite-sized, dopamine-friendly pieces to get the feeling of accomplishment
  • Record every small achievement
  • Share your progress with like-minded individuals
  • Celebrate each little step!

The key is to focus on and celebrate every little accomplishment because this will increase your motivation and your “feel good” in the pursuit of your goal(s) and not just by reaching them.
