During Thanksgiving, and especially as the year comes to an end, many of us naturally turn our attention to gratitude—thinking about the people, opportunities, and experiences that shaped our lives over the past year or years.
It’s a beautiful tradition and evidence consistently shows that it has real benefits.
Research and positive psychology have long confirmed the powerful connection between gratitude and our overall wellbeing. Regularly practicing gratitude has been linked to greater optimism, higher vitality, better physical health and even a stronger sense of motivation to work toward our goals.
But there is an essential part of gratitude that is often overlooked: APPRECIATING YOURSELF.
So much of the conversation around gratitude focuses outward. Yet one of the most transformative practices is turning that same appreciation inward. Recognizing your own progress, efforts, and growth is not self-indulgent—it’s foundational to personal and professional fulfillment.
As the year comes to a close, I invite you to pause and truly look back on HOW FAR YOU’VE COME. Not at what didn’t happen. Not at the unfinished projects or the plans that shifted.
Instead, focus on the experiences, learning and challenges that shaped you over the last year or years.
Take a moment to write down:
- What you accomplished.
Big wins, small wins, meaningful steps and even the actions that no one else saw but you know mattered. - What you learned.
New skills, new insights, or new ways of showing up—in your career, business, relationships, wellness or sports performance. - What you overcame.
The challenges you navigated, the moments you persisted, and the times you chose growth over comfort. - Who you became in the process.
Because achieving a goal is valuable, but the person you evolve into along the way is what truly defines you.
This practice is more than reflection—it is recognition. You’ve put in effort. You’ve adjusted, adapted, improved and persisted. You’ve shown resilience, commitment and courage. All that deserves to be acknowledged!
As you move into the final weeks of the year, let gratitude be a daily anchor. Appreciate the people in your life, the opportunities around you and most importantly, yourself.
This inner acknowledgment fuels confidence, clarity, and renewed energy as you step into the year ahead.
You’ve come so far!
Honor that.
Celebrate that.
And let it inspire your next chapter.
