Your Body Holds the Story

Have you ever felt a wave of emotion seemingly out of nowhere — during a massage, a stretch or even a moment of stillness?

Have you wondered why you feel stuck, overwhelmed or frequently tired?

There are reasons for that.

As Dr. Robert Schleip, a leading expert in fascia research, has pointed out: “Fascia remembers what the mind forgets.”

Fascia — the connective tissue that weaves throughout your entire body — doesn’t just provide structure and support. It also holds memory. Experiences, good or bad, including trauma and stress, can get stored in the body when we are unable to fully process and release them.

This is where the idea of cellular memory comes into play. Our cells, especially in the fascia, can retain impressions of past experiences. While our conscious mind may forget or suppress an event, our bodies don’t. They remember in various forms, such as tension, pain, posture, restricted movement, fatigue, distress and more.

In the book The Body Holds the Score, van de Kolk shares, “We have learned that trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.”

But here’s the good news:

Just as the body stores these memories, it can also release them.

If you’ve been feeling “stuck” — physically, emotionally, or even mentally — the path forward may lie in your body, not just your thoughts.

Techniques that Support Release & Reset

Here are powerful approaches that support the body in releasing what it has held onto:

Stretching & Myofascial Release

Gentle stretches and sustained pressure on the fascia help unwind patterns of restriction and release stored emotion.

Breathwork

Intentional breathing regulates the nervous system, creates emotional clarity, and supports deep tissue release. Beneficial techniques include box breathing, alternate nostril breathing and the breath focus technique. There are many more that can work for you.

Movement Therapies

Mindful movement reconnects you with your body’s intelligence, making it safer to release stored patterns. Powerful practices include Yoga, Feldenkrais, and Qigong and regular walks in nature can reset your body gradually and effectively.

Mindset Work Paired with Embodiment

Cognitive reframing combined with embodied practices accelerates transformation. After all, real change happens when the body and mind align.

How to Start Your Release

The first step to releasing and resetting is tuning into your body.  Take the time to listen and become aware of what you’re feeling.  No need to judge yourself.   Just feel and discover what’s there.  Many cover up their stored emotions, stress or pain with unhealthy habits or medications.

Set the intention to free yourself from it and start with techniques that feel good to you.

You don’t need to remember everything to heal.

You just need to be willing to listen — and trust your body’s capacity to let go.

One More: Animals & Pets

In addition to the above-noted techniques, many people have experienced remarkable release and reset through the help of animals and pets.

Animal researchers have observed that horses, dogs and other animals are tuned into people and their emotions. A horse’s heart generates a stronger electromagnetic field than a human’s heart. This field can influence human heart rhythms and create heart coherence.  Interactions with horses have been linked to reduced stress and gentle emotional release. The same can apply to dogs, cats and other animals.
